Single origin coffee can be traced back to a specific known geographical region. In some cases to coffee can even be further tacked back to the origin farm, which are called Single Estate coffees. The size of the farm doesn’t matter: It can be a small farm with a few acres or a large plantation but it needs to be one farm.
The majority of single origin coffees are cultivated and harvested by farmer cooperatives working with coffee-growing communities. Single-estate coffees are cultivated and harvested by a single farm or estate, the majority of which are family owned and operated.
Another type of Single Estate coffee is the so-called micro lot: A coffee of a single farm, restricted to a small range of altitude and a specific day of harvest.
